Magazine Archive: Features, Op-Eds & Excerpts

EcoIQ Magazine has featured the iconic spacecraft-view of Earth as its cover for a quarter of a century, and it remains a powerful image conveying the reality that we live on one planet and that we will thrive, or decline, as a whole. To some the image only whispers, to others it shouts, but the message embodied is the same: “Like it or not, we’re all in this together, so we had best start acting like it.” More >> Contributing Editors & Authors >>

EcoIQ Magazine was published online in a quarterly format between 1998 and 2002. It included hundreds of features, op-eds, news briefs, and book and resource reviews. In the years since, it has published a variety of feature and opinion articles in a less regular format. Our Magazine Archive section has preserved more than 20 features, opinion articles, book excerpts, and book reviews that have continuing value and relevance for the 2020s.

The magazine included articles or book excerpts by such sustainability thought leaders as Lester R. Brown (Worldwatch, Earth Policy Institute), Duane Elgin (Voluntary Simplicity), Bill Shireman (The Future 500), Denis Hayes (Earth Day), Dave Wann (Affluenza), as well as many other successful social innovators and activists. It was supported by an accomplished group of nine contributing editors and authors whose work added greatly to the value we could deliver. Visit our Magazine Archive >>

Guide to Speaking Success

EcoIQ’s Guide to Success as a Paid Speaker is an outgrowth of our work as a speakers bureau placing speakers for hundreds of paid talks at conferences, lecture series, business meetings, and many other types of venues. In the process, we learned a great deal. The lessons of that experience have been captured and presented in this guide. To succeed, you’ll need to effectively showcase your speaking talents, describe specifically what you talk about in a way that makes your value and appeal clear to program planners, and present yourself in a professional (and savvy) fashion.

Sections cover effective use of video, how to provide evidence of overall speaking excellence, stature, and credibility (as well as credibility on specific topics), how to describe your topics and speech content generally, how to respond effectively to inquiries, and how to negotiate your speaking fees, expense reimbursements, payment terms, and scope of activities before, during, and after the event. Online Article Collections

Our article collections include more than 200 essays, op-eds, speeches, reports, studies, interviews, book and anthology excerpts, and PowerPoint presentations. They are divided into sixteen topics covering sustainability, business and the economy, communities and development, green building, energy, transportation, the climate crisis, water resources, food, forestry, recycling, protecting nature, your health and environment, and more.

The thinkers, innovators, and pathbreakers of the sustainability movement have had a lot to say over the last couple of decades. In our article collections, these leaders explain problems, discuss possible responses, and point us toward workable pathways to move from the mess we’re in to the solutions we need. Link Center Online Resource Guide

Our Link Center Online Resource Guide includes links to thousands of organizations presented in 18 topic sections. The topics covered range from climate and clean energy to shaping smarter communities and transportation systems to safeguarding our food, water, air, and natural environment.

Each topic section is further divided into five subsections: Professional Associations; Business Associations & Businesses; Governmental Associations & Agencies; Educational Institutions & Centers; and Nonprofit Organizations. Most of the organizations listed in our directory are pro-sustainability, but some are included because they represent important industries or professions to our subject even though they do not necessarily take explicitly pro-sustainability stands. Our Other Sites: PromotingDemocracy.com &
StrengtheningDemocracyNow.com

PromotingDemocracy.com’s primary purpose is to encourage donations (and volunteering) for pro-democracy activist groups in swing states. Created in 2021, it was originally focused on the 2022 mid-term elections. A dozen people helped build and promote the site, and we identified more than 2,000 groups that work to stimulate and support voting.

For the 2024 election, we have retained online a large portion of PromotingDemocracy.com that identifies and links to activist groups, and we created another new site, StrengthingDemocracyNow.com, which addresses how we can reinforce and improve our democracy going forward. In addition to focusing directly on Strengthening Democracy, this new site includes sections on Protecting Our Homes & Communities, Building Cooperation, Becoming a More Effective Activist, Fundraising for Democracy Activism, and links to more than 200 National Organizations Supporting Pro-Democracy Activists.
