While much has been accomplished to improve outdoor air quality, many problems remain. Technology has helped reduce pollutants from new vehicles, however there are more miles being traveled by more vehicles. Pollutants from fixed locations, such as coal-fired power plants and manufacturing facilities, continue to threaten the environment and human health. Specific air pollutants of concern include mercury, carbon monoxide, lead, ozone, sulfur dioxide, particulates, diesel exhaust, volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, PM-10, dust, smoke, and soot.
